I sound like a broken record, but I hate heavy makeup. Nor am I into makeup hoarding—the discreet destroyer of your medicine cabinet (…and bathroom shelves, and bathroom counter, and bedroom floor, and nightstand drawer…).
In truth, I stick to a teensy number of carefully curated basics (that I’ll be outlining in a later post). One item I do go all-out with when the mood strikes? Red lipstick, ladies.
Nailing down the right rouge is a challenge, and I’ve tested more pigments and textures than I can type. I have a loving relationship with three lipsticks, all by different brands, that pack different punch depending on how intense I want my red lip to look. Each one, when discovered, made me send a shout out to the makeup gods.
1. The Dewey Sheen
This post from my favorite beauty site inspired me purchase Medieval by Lipstick Queen. Medieval is carry-with-you-everywhere lip color that adds a barely there rose tint to your pout. Like a chic cherry Chapstick, Medieval gives lips a healthy flush of moisturizing color without over accentuating them.
2. The Matte Stain
Rock a stronger rouge with NARS’ Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella. For you naturally gorgeous gals whose makeup routine entails one measly swipe of mascara, applying this pencil (that I posted about last year in a different color) is effortless. Dot it on your lips to create a slight stain that you can darken by continually dabbing. It will stay put through multiple morning coffee runs.
3. The Vampy Statement
If you’re going for it—and I mean really going for it—this head-turning lip color would make Marilyn Monroe proud. YSL’s Grenat Satisfaction glides on smooth and dries matte (a rarity for rich lipsticks). A little trick I learned from an editorial makeup artist? To prevent the color from bleeding, take an angled make-up brush and swipe concealer around the outermost edge of your lips before applying. This ensures the pigment will stay in the lines.
